Papers, [ca. 1820] - [ca. 1870], n.d., including depositions, writs, instruments of protests, guardian's bonds, case notes, court dockets, client correspondence, accounts, checks, bills of costs, receipts, ledgers, and including oversized items. This collection of correspondence, legal documents, and case notes provides a valuable record of a nineteenth century law firm. The legal records include court depositions, writs, and dockets. The case notes include the legal opinions and cases of Ball and Crommelin and their clients, as well as interrogation notes. The papers are from a wide number of courts, including the United States District Court, the New York District Court, the Maryland District Court, and eight Alabama county courts. The subjects of these papers and the client correspondence include property claims,bankruptcy, debt claims and complaints. There are also references to the Crommelin plantation and the sale and purchase of cotton. The collection also contains the financial records and accounts of the firm for their cases. These records include a large number of checks and receipts.

The law firm of Ball and Crommelin operated in Montgomery in 1833 after Charles Crommelin obtained the right to practice law in the area. Little is known about George C. Ball, except that prior to 1833, he was associated with Thorington and Dargan, sometimes identified as Dargan and Ball.
